Carolyn Kaut Roth, known to most as Candi is a registered radiographer, who
majored in physics in undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Carolyn currently continues her education, by pursuing a clinical Master’s
degree (MSc) in Magnetic Resonance for Radiographers at Anglia Polytechnic
Cambridge United Kingdom.
At the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Carolyn was the director of
technologist education, including six-month internship programs, one-week
fellowship programs, and weekend seminars for MR technologists. She also ran
continuing education programs for radiographers entitled "Pizza Rounds"
(monthly in the evenings), "Registry Review for MRI, CT or CV (twice per year
on weekends). Candi has assisted in re-opening a school for Radiologic
Technologists at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and will be the
director of the advanced level internships in CT, mammography, cardio-vascular
interventional (as well as MRI) slated to begin (one per year) over the next
several years.
Candi has also acted as part-time faculty and/or imaging educational consultant
for other MRI programs for technologists including: Tenent Health Systems,
Elkins Park Hospital (Educator 1999-present), Graduate Hospital in association
with, Cooper Medical Center (Educator 1994-1996), Thomas Jefferson University
School of Allied Health (1991-1994). She has participated hundreds of
educational seminars for technologists (both live and via satellite) and has
had the opportunity lecture in 45 of the 50 United States of America, as well
as abroad in such places as Canada, United Kingdom, Scotland, Ireland, Germany,
Israel, New Zealand and Australia. Finally, in 2001, Carolyn presented her
first lecture at the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA) as a refresher
course faculty and was invited back for 2002.
Ms. Roth's Publications include MR books for technologists including: First
edition 1993, second 1998 & most recently the Third Edition 2005 of MRI in
Practice with Cathy Westbrook published also in Portuguese in 1999, Seminar
Notes and Credits (SNAC) Volume I: Basic and Advanced Principles of MRI (2002),
the Review Guide for Technologists (2001), MRI Workbook for Technologists
published 1992 and in Spanish in 1998, and Review Questions for MRI with Bill
Faulkner published 1994. She has two other contributions to publications
including: Chapters for Radiographic Positioning Procedures, MRI Handbook (1993
& 1999), Review Guide of MRI: Principles & Applications (1994), MRI
Handbook for technologists (1997), MRI Modules for Technologists (1999 -
2000).
Carolyn has served the Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT), the
technologist portion of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in
Medicine (ISMRM) since its inception. She served as one of the founders of the
society in 1990, the chairman of the education committee (1990 - 1991),
president elect (1992), president (1993), past president (1994) and served on
the finance committee (1995). During her presidency she started the regional
educational seminars, inspired the local chapters and began the SMRT newsletter
(Signals). She has provided ties for international SMRT chapters in London,
Canada, Australia and Israel. Carolyn has seen the society grow from less than
300 members in its beginning, to over 1,200 active members. She was again a
Policy board member 2000 – 2004.
In 2001, Candi was voted as the winner of the Award presented by
www.auntminnie.com, in the "Best of Radiology" category, as the "Most Effective
Radiologic Technologist Educator" for the 2001 Year. For her service in the
SMRT, Carolyn has been presented with awards from the society including:
"Executive Committee award", "Presidents Award", "Crues-Kressel Award" and is
currently nominated for the "Honorary Membership" which is awarded for
extraordinary achievement and an exceptional level of service and support for
the section and the mission of the SMRT. She has also been awarded “Who's Who
Registry of Rising Young Americans” and nominated for “Woman of the Year” by
the American Biographical Institute of International Research. Carolyn’s first
award was presented in X-ray school for the highest scholastic average "Charles
W. Smith Award".

Ms. Roth has served on MRI Educational Task forces for The American Council for
Education with the Department of Education for the Federal Government of the
United States. She has acted as a consultant for corporate partners such as
Bracco (formerly Squibb Diagnostics), Nycomed-Amerscham (formerly
Sanofi-Winthrop), Berlex Medical, Medrad, Picker International, Siemens
Meddical, GE Medical Systems, and Philips Medical Systems. She worked with the
conference team for the spring meeting (May 2000) American Healthcare Radiology
Administrators (AHRA). Candi has also be published an article for the American
Radiologic Nursing Association in 2002.
Candi has also assisted with mainstream science with the exhibit for the
Franklin Institute Science Museum entitled: “It’s all in your head”. She has
also provided presentations for educational programs for the Girl Scouts of
America and the School Engineering and Applied Science of the University of
Pennsylvania project entitled: (Women & Science). She has also provided
information for a series educational videos "The Human Body in Action" for
elementary school students and middle school students for the evaluation of the
human body.
Now, Carolyn is producing educational Videos and On-line educational modules
for all aspects of imaging specialties. To date, she has produced modules in
MRI , CT and Radiography, and is currently producing modules for Ultrasound and
Mammography. These educational offerings are available through some of the
leading manufacturers of imaging equipment and contrast agents, as well as on
line through this web page.
